A quick and easy baked beans recipe featuring a savory maple bourbon sauce and crispy bacon topping, perfect for any occasion and packed with bold flavors.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cans (28 oz each) baked beans (e.g., Bush’s)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/3 cup pure maple syrup (Grade A)
  • 1/4 cup bourbon
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 8 slices thick-cut bacon, cooked crispy and chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cook bacon in a medium skillet over medium heat until crispy, about 8–10 minutes. Drain on paper towels and chop into bite-sized pieces. Leave about 1 tablespoon bacon fat in skillet.
  3. Add chopped onion to bacon fat and cook over medium heat until translucent and soft, about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 more minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn.
  4. In a mixing bowl, whisk together maple syrup, bourbon, Dijon mustard, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper.
  5. In a large oven-safe baking dish, pour in baked beans. Stir in sautéed onions and garlic, then pour maple bourbon sauce over everything and mix gently to combine.
  6. Bake uncovered for 45 minutes until sauce thickens and beans bubble around edges.
  7. Remove from oven, sprinkle crispy bacon evenly over top, then return to oven for another 10–15 minutes to crisp bacon further and infuse flavor.
  8. Let beans rest for 5 minutes before serving to allow sauce to set.

Notes

Cook bacon separately and add at the end to keep it crispy. Use gluten-free Worcestershire sauce for gluten-free version. Bourbon can be substituted with strong brewed coffee or omitted. Avoid burning garlic during sautéing. Sauce can be thickened under broiler if needed.
