These Sloppy Joe sliders combine savory ground beef with tangy tomato sauce and melty sharp cheddar cheese on toasted slider buns, perfect for quick family meals or entertaining.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 recommended for juiciness)
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and freshly cracked black pepper, to taste
  • 12 slider buns (brioche or potato rolls preferred)
  • 8 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, sliced or shredded
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until browned and no longer pink, about 6-8 minutes. Drain excess fat if needed.
  2. Stir in the chopped onion and minced garlic. Cook for 3-4 minutes until the onion is softened and fragrant.
  3. Reduce heat to medium. Add ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Stir well to combine.
  4. Let the mixture simmer gently for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. If the sauce gets too thick, splash in a tablespoon of water to loosen it.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Cut slider buns in half horizontally. Brush the cut sides with melted butter. Place on a baking sheet, buttered side up. Toast in the oven for about 5 minutes until golden and slightly crispy.
  6. Spoon a generous amount of the sloppy joe mixture onto the bottom halves of the buns. Top each with a slice or shredded cheddar cheese. Place the top buns over the cheese. Optionally, pop them back into the oven for 2-3 minutes to melt the cheese.
  7. Arrange the sliders on a platter and serve warm.

Notes

Toast slider buns with melted butter to prevent sogginess and add crunch. Browning the beef well adds extra flavor. Adjust vinegar and sugar to balance sauce sweetness and tang. Optionally melt cheese in oven for gooey texture. Can substitute ground turkey or plant-based meat for vegetarian option and use gluten-free buns if needed.
