A quick and easy recipe featuring a crispy bread bowl filled with a rich, gooey pizza dip made with a blend of cheeses, marinara sauce, and classic pizza flavors. Perfect for family gatherings, game nights, or casual snacking.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large round sourdough or Italian bread loaf (about 8 inches diameter)
  • Olive oil (for brushing)
  • 1 cup marinara or pizza sauce
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • ½ cup sliced pepperoni or cooked Italian sausage (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • ½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes
  • Fresh basil leaves, chopped (optional)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Extra bread cubes or crunchy veggies like carrot sticks or celery (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Using a serrated knife, slice off the top 1 to 1½ inches of the bread loaf. Carefully hollow out the inside, leaving about a ½-inch thick shell all around. Save the bread you scoop out for toasting later.
  3. Brush the inside of the bread bowl lightly with olive oil.
  4. Place the bread bowl and the torn bread chunks on a baking sheet. Bake for about 10 minutes until the bread bowl feels firm and slightly golden.
  5. In a mixing bowl, combine softened cream cheese, marinara sauce, minced garlic, oregano, and red pepper flakes. Stir until smooth and fully blended.
  6. Fold in shredded mozzarella, Parmesan, and pepperoni or sausage if using. Add salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Mix well.
  7. Fill the toasted bread bowl with the dip mixture, packing it in gently but firmly.
  8. Place the filled bread bowl back on the baking sheet and bake for another 15-20 minutes, until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and edges start to brown.
  9. Scatter fresh chopped basil on top for garnish and serve immediately with toasted bread cubes or crunchy veggies.

Notes

Use whole milk mozzarella for a creamier melt. For a vegetarian twist, omit meats and add sautéed mushrooms or roasted red peppers. For gluten-free, use gluten-free bread or substitute with hollowed-out roasted bell pepper or portobello mushroom. If bread bowl browns too quickly, tent with foil halfway through baking. Broil 1-2 minutes at the end for extra crispy top but watch carefully. Avoid microwaving leftovers to prevent soggy bread and rubbery cheese.
